Tsunami's Hungry

Cure your food and passport blues.

I’m Tsunami… and I’m hungry

Cooking has always been a matter of personal pride in my family, with my parents always playfully arguing over who’s the better cook. I think we all (including my dad) tacitly accepted that my mum is better, but it was never just about that.

For my mum, cooking is a way to express her artistic side. She takes pride in presenting her food well, and using her curiosity and intuition to perfect new recipes she learns. She definitely cooks to impress, in the most “motherly” way. A seat at her table is a blessing.

My dad takes a more… funky approach to cooking. He’s extremely experimental, yet he only loves food prepared using traditional methods. He’s really proud of using high quality ingredients that he can source, yet he’s highly resourceful so sometimes makes questionable choices. He’s very competitive when it comes to cooking, yet is totally unwilling to write any recipes, choosing instead of improvise each time. A seat at his table is always exciting.

My parents’ passion for cooking has left a strong mark on me and my siblings. Each of us have a special relationship with food, and we express it in different ways. I’ve inherited curiosity, intuition and pride from my mum, experimentation, appreciation for traditional methods and (unfortunately) improvisation from my dad. What I add is an openness to food from around the world, a deep interest in trying to re-create dishes with non-traditional or healthier ingredients, and lots of creativity.

This blog is one way of sharing my passion for cooking.

Enjoy 😋
